Nicol of Skene were contracted to install site access tracks and compounds for SSEN. The project involves carrying out 4 No Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) shots to install 2 x 33kv circuits under the A96 Trunk Road and the Glen Burn between Insch and Huntly, in Aberdeenshire.
Machinery used:
With challenging ground conditions including encountering rock, alongside tight dry clays and pockets of water running through the rock, our team worked with DAM Geotechnical to ensure safe and effective drilling. The team utilised the performance of our new Ditchwitch AT120 as well as the Ditchwitch AT40, with the all-terrain systems on each rig making short work of the 100m long drills in the difficult ground conditions.
Project outcome:
The ongoing project began in July and is estimated to be completed by the end of September. Following the successful installation of the ducts by HDD, Nicol Civils will complete the works by installing the PVC ducts to connect the drill shots ahead of cables being pulled through.
This project is testament to Nicol of Skene’s diverse capabilities in civil engineering and showcases our highly professional team’s skillset when working with challenging ground conditions.
