Nicol of Skene were appointed by Omega Proteins Limited to supply and install a 315mm diameter gas main to their new rendering facility in Kintore. The entirety of the project was aimed to provide the new site with gas by installing 3.1km of gas main and connecting it to the existing network. Nicol of Skene carried out all associated civil engineering and horizontal directional drilling works within this project, which lasted an overall duration of 19 weeks.
Part of the project involved carrying out the associated works to install a new GRP kiosk, including the supply of the kiosk itself. GRP kiosks are installed to provide housing for gas meters, gas analyser equipment and control panels etc.
The vast majority of the 3.1km installation was carried out within the curtilage of the carriageway, extending through the town of Kintore. To avoid major disruption to the public, Nicol of Skene opted to use horizontal directional drilling techniques to drill under the existing roundabout, resulting in a drilling length of 131m. Appropriate traffic management was planned and implemented to keep the disruption to a minimum, as with all other areas of construction on, or near, the carriageway during the project.
Pressure testing and connection works were carried out after the new gas main was installed, and on completion of all works, full reinstatement of all excavated ground was carried out within the local authority’s specification.
